What distinguishes them is that pyramid schemes are based on an unsustainable model that... Cannot continue...to grow...without.....collapsing? And the people at the top run away with everyone's...money...

Ugh. Businesses do not need to grow to be sustainable, whereas pyramid scheme must grow exponentially to continue to exist. I'm a lefty guy, I promise. I

No, a pyramid scheme pays off early entrants with money from new entrants. It is unsustainable because all it does is grow; it does not produce anything. That has nothing in common with a business.
-
This is absolutely the difference, and conflating pyramid schemes with businesses in general lends pyramid schemes a legitimacy that they absolutely do not deserve.

What about the RISK? If the profits don’t exceed analyst expectations the board may not approve a massive bonus of stock and you’ll have to rely on just your generous salary. If you get fired and have to embarrassingly cash your golden parachute. You ready to fall on that sword?

Pro tip: In other financial milieus "extra steps" is often referred to as "laundering".
