Getting a date gives people the illusion that they're going to procreate and have something to live for and somehow give them the means to live on. Being on a date, however, may make the idea of a quick death more attractive
The bizarre reality of the human condition is that almost everyone is more bothered by being turned down for a date than the realization that life is meaningless.
