historically a lot of euro countries especially northern social democratic ones worked really hard at forming a cross-class national culture, this was even more true of former communist countries. the US just has the most inequality, the biggest "high-culture" illiteracy rate

i see you're getting ratioed for this but it is a slippy slope into anti-intellectualism/aesthetic relativism (+ inaccurate) to claim that all the national cultures of Europe are just bourgeois culture. but youre right that most Europeans are elitist about American culture

The hot take was inspired by Sartre visiting American and seeing that working class culture, especially Jazz and Cowboy movies, was the dominant culture; as opposed to France, where bourgeois culture dominated. He saw this as a good, but the American intellectuals hated it.

if your point is simply that historically the sources of the US’s cultural production were more diverse/less elitist then sure. but that is just because you simply didn’t have an entrenched old-world cultural elite to be those gate-keepers (i sound like Tocqueville Jesus save me)

in what way are cowboy movies "working class culture"? they were cultural products produced by a wealthy and powerful industry; in most cases, they pushed an ahistorical and whitewashed narrative that romanticized american settler colonialism as heroic and right.
