Actually, the recent trend is for the Democrats to NOT move to the center. And it's working.
Democrats, wisely moving to the center to gain votes: "we promise to be a bit more racist." Republicans: "dang, now we are going to have to be even more racist to differentiate ourselves."

The impression I get is that the older/established Democrats are the ones referred to here. The more progressive Democrats appear to be newer/younger.

That is exactly what happened in Denmark, with the result being the social democrats now hinting that we should leave human rights agreements so that they, too, can be super racist.
