One thing people don't talk about enough is that optimism is driven mostly by laziness. It's much easier to say everything is fine than it is to actually try to understand what is going on.

It’s more driven by hopelessness and anxiety. Most cynics don’t believe their own cynicism, but the prospect of acting and possibly (even probably) failing is a vulnerability that these people, for whatever reason, cannot risk.
