It would be hard to explain alcohol to an alien species. "Yeah so, after work we all drink a bit of poison to make our brains not work good. You see, we are all afraid of saying something stupid, so the only way we can socialize is to make ourselves even more stupid."

It's more like "We're all born with an invisible hole in our chests that can only be filled with love. But love is difficult and painful so we try to fill the hole with alcohol (and drugs, gambling, TV, food, etc.), which just makes love harder to find." Alien: what's love?

i don't think we're born with the hole. it's conditioned into us when we're taught about all of the standards we have to meet in order to be worthy.
