It's weird to me when people freak out about a data breach at Facebook, like their privacy is somehow lost. My dudes, they are selling your data to anyone and everyone. It's already lost. Nothing changed just because they didn't monetize it this time.

The only people who should be pissed are the shareholders - they are giving away the product for free!

You're misinformed. And that's common. But you're also sharing that misinformation with quite a large audience. And that worries me. I challenge you to name *one* company that Facebook is selling your data to. Only one.

You're wrong. Every Single Person Who had their personal data shared with Cambridge Analytica Voluntarily and explicitely shared that information through the standard Facebook app signup flow. Facebook often fails users. But selling your info is *not* something they do.

Except their friends whose data were also collected never shared anything. And that's 87 million users compared to a few hundred thousand who opted in. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook%E2%80%93Cambridge_Analytica_data_scandal … Writing things like this doesn't make them true.

Stay on point. What part of your argument proves that Facebook sold the data again? People volunteered info about their friends. Cambridge Analytica misused that data. When did Facebook earn money for the data from Cambridge Analytica - which is the definition of selling?

Can you prove that they didn't sell it? If this wasn't brought into attention by whistleblowers, nobody would ever learn about the case. Who's to say that Facebook didn't profit from it? Who's to say that there haven't been dozens of similar cases that no one knows about?

I won't. Unfortunately for you, the way it works, is that it's the one who points the finger who has the burden of proof.

There's a core distinction people should be more aware of: When you sign up to Facebook, you're not the customer. You're the product.

Yes, some people do put that stuff on Facebook. And he's correct in stating that the data advertisers & the like get isn't the same as passwords being compromised or addresses, numbers, etc. Aggregated, non-personally identifiable, coded demographic data vs. actual account info.
