I didn't have the space but ideally this tweet, and really most other tweets, would end: "...you god damn nerds."

In any whether random or determined, Schopenhauer nailed it: Der Mensch kann tun was er will; er kann aber nicht wollen was er will.
-
Also see Schopenhauer's disciple-turned-apostate Nietzsche: "I shall never tire of underlining a concise little fact which these superstitious people are loath to admit—namely, that a thought comes when “it” wants, not when “I” want".

Physicist here. Yeah, deterministic universe is indeed very much in doubt. And looking at neurons to determine the existence of free will is about on part with watching cars on a free way and deciding you now know the core mechanics of macroeconomics.

How does a probabilistic universe net you free will? To me, random seems no more free than determined.

In modern view universe is not deterministic (unless MWI) & micro events dominated by quantum & classical noise, but deviations from statistical norms would have to be observable for any interactionist model of dualism to be correct. +

However, the whole free will debate is silly. To the extent that we are able to think about it, in any meaningful sense, we have free will because we are confronted with what we recognize as choices and we have to make them, also we can change our minds. +
