Probably the most ironic thing about the IQ test is that it requires thousands of times more intelligence to understand what the questions are asking than it does to answer them. But because our brains are so poorly optimized for anagrams and stuff, we struggle on the easy part.

Try reading a little of the IQ research literature. It shows important correlations with real-life variables. Linda Gottfredson's "Why g Matters: The Complexity of Everyday Life" is a good place to start. http://www1.udel.edu/educ/gottfredson/reprints/1997whygmatters.pdf …

if you think iq tests isolate a single construct called "intelligence" your knowledge is several decades out of date

Not sure but I think you’re referring to “multiple intelligence” theory. I think psychometric studies have shown that it doesn’t exist. But maybe you’re talking about something else idk about

They test pattern recognition. Probably one of the most useful skills to have and hardly an edge case.

Reckon spatial locating in foreign environment, or comprehension of an unknown language in a hostile situation are probably more useful and less edge case form of pattern recognition test that'd give a more useful indication of intelligence. Think that's what our friend meant
