¿What kind of existential philosophy were you reading?
Reading existential philosophy doesn't make your realize that "life is meaningless", it makes you realize that life is too meaningful for you to let it pass you by, like a movie, with you as nothing but a passive observer.

Sounds like you're trapped in the judeochristian framework of value. All meaning is internal, assigned by you to things external. That's how it's always been for everyone, even when people take hints from external authority. It's quite empowering really.
