If college is a job training program then your boss should be paying for it. The idea that we should go into personal debt in order to better serve the business owners is beyond absurd.

Then go into personal debt and become your own business owner. Insure that all of your philosophical ideas about labor are put into practice within your own business. Be the better business owner. That's the answer, not crying and playing the victim.

Ah capitalism. Where the greatest thing one can aspire to is being a wage slaver instead of the wage slave.

Not to mention the benefits an educated population holds for it's society. Germany has a population with 96% having "some" college. Others, (all ranked above the US in standard of living, business, longevity, happiness...) r publically funded, wth some pay'n students a stipend!

Hi, Economist have explained this puzzle. Google “firm specific human capital investment.” 1/2

The idea is: a firm is only incentivized to pay for training that is uniquely valuable to that firm. Ow the employee will take the training elsewhere (and use it to bargain up her wages). This gives the employee, not the employer, the incentive to pay for “general training” 2/2
