Just like when we imagine that alien life would visit us just to treat us the way we treat each other.
The fact that we assume that if artificial intelligence gets too smart it will destroy humanity says a lot more about humans than it does machines.

There is true danger to behold with AI. With AI you run the risk of literally creating something smarter than yourself by orders of magnitude without any sense of emotion. There are a myriad number of ways that could end disastrously without the AI even being malevolent.

Totally correct. The fear/caution of AI safety researchers isn’t based in the simplistic assumption that smart AI will be like us, just smarter: the argument is (roughly) that intelligence is inherently powerful, and power is inherently dangerous

Movie idea. AI takes over, thinks it is better to have humans around than not, but takes control of nukes and stuff so that people don't hurt themselves. Humans rebel out of spite and nuke themselves.

The fear as I understand it is that there's no guarantee that AI will have values compatible with ours. Especially if they are bound to some narrowly specified utility function.
