Cars are "easy" to operate and ubiquitous whereas helicopters aren't, so clearly the solution to easy flight is to just take a car and make it work in 3 dimensions right? Or so I imagine the thought process goes.

Just think of the loss of precision when platformers went from 2D to 3D. Now imagine it's a car and you're inside it. It's a whole other meaning to 'instakill'. :-P

a less accessible flying car? Problem here is that those predictions fall short to recognize one thing - technological progress is not distributed equally.

A large factor in the distribution inequality is it’s significantly harder to control air traffic than automobile traffic. So I think policy and traffic control/law are the major issues.
