Technically, you own your tweets, but by using the service you grant Twitter full rights to do whatever they want with your content in order to profit from it. From your perspective, it makes no difference, but from the company's perspective, it benefits them more this way.

I'm not trying to be a smartass. I thought about this a lot when I worked at Google and realized how much YouTube is an exploitation of labor, including of the musicians whose royalties have dropped through the floor when their songs are streamed. It's all very carefully crafted.

"Buy your own house" - The bank owns it until you pay off your loans. "Start a business" - Unless you are already wealthy, your small business will likely be owned by initial investors. "Write a personal blog" - That blog will be owned by whatever webservice you use.
