Nerdiness has been totally co-opted by capitalism. A nerd used to mean studying something. There were science nerds, math nerds, etc. Today it means buying certain products from the biggest corporations in America. There are Nintendo nerds, Marvel nerds, Star Wars nerds, etc.
People say that nerdiness has gone mainstream, but this is a mistake. It was never nerdy to buy anything, unless it was a chemistry set or a telescope. The very concept of nerdiness has been transformed drastically into something that can go mainstream in the commercial sense.
People are now encouraged to be "nerds" by dressing up as their favorite corporate mascots, or decorating their house in the theme of billion dollar intellectual property. Nerdiness is now defining yourself not by your knowledge, but by your habits as a consumer.
Yo like I hate funkopops as much as the next jaded genY burnout, but let's stop dissing on the kids who make costumes, because they're y'know, practicing a skill? Also consumption has _always_ been a part of nerdom, only we used to buy culture and TOOLS, instead of shibboleths.
D&D was a toolset. Telescopes were a TOOLSET and from these we could develop our own cultural experiences, and hopefully pass them along. And despite capitalism's bullshit, arguably it's improved with things like Videogame modders, and video essays on youtube.
Agree in parts, consumming certain cultural niches was always part of it. Comic books, action figures and so on...
Also the way it which it’s been co-opted by large corporations like Google, Monsanto so to where if you question the ethics of these companies you’re anti science/technology. Most of these people are not even true nerds, they just like comic book movies.
