Once I was drunk on the upper floor of a double-decker bus in London late one friday night and I was staring at the steamed up window and it came to me: philosophy is the history of human stupidity.
The best thing about philosophy is that all the great philosophers in history were basically wrong about almost everything, so there's really not that much pressure to be right.

Best practice is to read in such a way that this being in the wrong may be seen, as they surely saw themselves, as being in the right. Takes a little work, but it can be done.
