Very interesting. Someone really should do comparative research like this between US/UK/FR/DE/SE/JP systems not to compare systems but to see what trends/observations are system/culture specific and what are general features.

Many of these resonate with my experiences of research in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan but I'd be interested in a more systematic comparison. There are local differences but all lack funds for fundamental research, ECRs, and increasing pressure to publish with peer-review.
