We have a lot of trouble with those types in the climate discourse, especially engineers. Something about being science-adjacent without being scientifically trained inspires a small but loud minority of overconfident crackpots.

It's a need to project certainty and confidence, even when they are uneducated about the subject. People less likely to take action when scared/uncertain.

The computer science ones are the worst. For some reason, an ability to program computers gives people the idea they can be an expert at anything. I say this as a computer science person who has had to stop myself from falling into this trap.
