    Just got the gas meter fitted with a seismic shutoff valve, sometimes called a Northridge valve. Cost a couple hundred bucks and took an hour to have installed. There's a ball bearing in there that falls and cuts off gas in case of 5.2 or greater shaking.

    my rules of reading vendor documentation: 1) never trust the vendor 2) words don't mean what you expect them to 3) vendor knows their domain much better than you do 4) there's no easy way to combine (1) and (3). you're screwed. good luck

    A couple of days ago, I talked about an "engine the size of a house". It's a not an exaggeration. What are the engines and other equipment like on a container ship? This is a 66,000gt ship, approximately 280m long. Rated about 5500 TEU. This is the top of the main engine.

    “Unwritten rules” only benefit the privileged. I’ve seen too many hiring managers who discount applicants who don’t send “thank you” letters while saying they value diversity.

    It’s grad application season and I see a lot of “I would never take a student who didn’t contact me!” comments. A reminder that there are a lot of first-gen students out there who might not know that this is a thing and they deserve a shot at discussing their interests w/ you.
