When you abstract far enough, everything starts to look the same. Also your thoughts start to sound really pretentious.

Considering how finicky kids can be about everything being just right, it's a lucky miracle they can't see how crappy their drawings are.

Gurus: Kobe stayed up all night practicing! Work harder you weakling! Also gurus: Go to bed early and get 8 hours of sleep! You're way more productive after good rest. idk

Prompted by a recent post and discussion I wanted to talk a little bit about how disagreement over terminology is both real and substantial.

"You are 100% wrong." Oh, come on. People are rarely 100% wrong.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH PEOPLE WHO GET UP TO GET OFF A COMMUTER TRAIN MORE THAN A FULL MINUTE BEFORE IT STOPS?! THERE'S ALWAYS PLENTY OF TIME TO GET OUT AND NO LONG QUEUE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS AND IT OFFENDS ME. Thank you.

Since saying this I've been thinking about if "scare quotes" really mean what I'm getting at. There certainly are respectable uses of quote marks other than literal quotation. Maybe "sneer quotes"?

Scare quotes really do make me sad. It's dismissal, sneering and lack of respect, concentrated into four little lines. Using them makes you a worse person.

My six-year-old is experimenting with air quotes and is getting it almost right. "Adorable".

Two important kinds of wrongness: -a claim escaping its low-rigor environment and being presented in a high-rigor environment (counseling talk —> science paper) -a claim escaping its high-rigor environment and being presented in a low-rigor environment (quantum woo)

I'm starting to feel like half of all criticism ever is like this: "Here's why what you're saying is all wrong." "I didn't mean that, I meant this." "You shouldn't mean that ! Anyway here's why what you didn't mean but should have meant is all wrong..."

Is there a book about the use of scare quotes to invalidate concepts and arguments?

This is definitely happening and I think it's both right and wrong. You can very much understand something and disagree with it, but I'm much more in doubt about how well you can understand something and *dismiss* it. Big difference.

It's weird to me that so many people seem to hate this so much. It doesn't say that metaphor, shorthand or non-literal communication or anything is wrong or bad. It's just a way to deliver information in an amusing form. It's supposed to be funny, not serious. Or am I wrong?

I'll reiterate that these are my impressions. My sense of how valid the ideas of the pomoid cluster are vary over time. Sometimes I think I've been too dismissive and biased and other times I think "no they really are dangerous nuts" to myself. I expect it to keep changing. END

—and what's overreaching hyperbole and non-compelling art-argumentation (artimentation?) that (uncharitably phrased) *tries to turn diffuse moral debt into local political capital by laundering it through arcane but mostly not relevant arguments about scientific epistemology*.

I guess it really comes down to *very* different ideas about the nature of knowledge and how to argue/persuade. In my personal view, the best way to criticize the ideas in the pomoid cluster is to phrase them plainly and make it as easy as possible to see what's valid—
