Respectability politics is basically the discourse prominent leaders (especially black) use. They tell you if you just go and get an education and a career then you won’t have negative encounters with cops, when we know it’s not true.

but I feel you. I have these convos w family and tell them all the time my PhD does NOT protect me. In fact, white people are ANGRY I’m in “their” space 9x/10. Speaking a certain way, looking a certain way, these degrees, nothing separates us. Black is Black -
It's NEVER good enough for them. If you got it from a school they don't see as elite, then they gave it to you. If it's from a "good" school then it was affirmative action. It's moving goalposts

Exactly black people should be able to exist in whichever way that may be.. I wish they would stop pushing this narrative that being educated and well spoken is going to separate you from the rest.

Considering Blacks make up only 13% of the total population, it still means we are killed at a higher rate than Whites. Basic understanding of how stats work.
