Facebook to do more about coronavirus misinformation. That's good! I hope efforts are matched w/ transparency so we (& by 'we', I mean researchers much smarter than me) can learn more abt how this stuff spreads and what to do abt it proactively & offline https://about.fb.com/news/2020/01/coronavirus/ …pic.twitter.com/WsxxXv6a14

.... looks like this might be something they're gonna need to work out?pic.twitter.com/DqJ8qQdPd1

Facebook can review for privacy where no consent providedpic.twitter.com/cvt0QCavOx

Yup, public decisions and a body of "case law" will develop.pic.twitter.com/b5ENzlSQ5s

Issue of how amicii would know also, as you highlight, also an issue. Cases not listed on the website, it doesn't seem, until decision made. Only the person involved notified
They should change this too.pic.twitter.com/uYeKHjVrLK

This is something I think is a real weakness right now. Currently, bylaws only foresees amicus briefs by request of the board. I think the board should change that.pic.twitter.com/5ULRnZw6Uu

And another call just today for companies and gvt to work more closely together, this time from Warren. Let's be clear -- we're talking about political speech here. Cooperation might be necessary, but it needs to be carefully designed and with oversight https://elizabethwarren.com/plans/fighting-digital-disinformation?source=soc-WB-ew-tw-rollout-20200129 …pic.twitter.com/xI4DwYPHXV

Good move by Pinterest, banning misinformation about voting & the census. This quote stood out
There's an urgent conversation we need to have about when and how we want companies to work together.
(paper for @knightcolumbia on this out soon) https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/paloma/the-technology-202/2020/01/29/the-technology-202-pinterest-bans-misinformation-about-voting-and-the-census/5e307ba288e0fa6ea99d60fc/ …pic.twitter.com/8GZIQRBYDd

Really important work on Facebook's "coordinated inauthentic behavior" takedowns here https://si.ma/fb-cib/ And the key point to me
Discourse around this is so militaristic but it's a real free speech blind spotpic.twitter.com/CT1AkvDlOA

Great reporting from
@cameronwilson here "Australia Won't Ban Manifestos Similar To The Christchurch Shooter's Because They Didn't Go As Viral" AVM dfn would *not* include manifestos. Commissioner shd know this. And virality shd not determine legality. https://www.buzzfeed.com/cameronwilson/australia-manifesto-internet-ban-christchurch-attack …pic.twitter.com/VHUv2J4mYD

Lots more in there. It's an impressive and important report. Kudos for Fb for commissioning it - now they need to respond and implement it. Overall, the report shares my cautious optimism about the project. /FINpic.twitter.com/dZa0YN9J4Y

Further to this, the report notes that actually incorporating the Board's proposals will be necessary to uphold Fb's responsibility not to repeat human rights violations. /11pic.twitter.com/YhsWDdccvh

Wholeheartedly agree with this though - I'm okay with the Board's policy recs not necessarily being binding, but there needs to be a requirement to formally respond (this is in the Charter) and a timeline for doing so (this is not) /10pic.twitter.com/MwqSIeFd6u

Another clear sign this was a truly independent review - recs that the Board be consulted on policy changes (Fb prob wouldn't love this!). I don't know I agree - I think Fb should consult other experts, while the Board is a separate body that "checks" decisions retrospectively /9pic.twitter.com/njBd0Y2qRL

Critical - so much so that even technically out of scope the report makes the point that the Board doesn't absolve Fb of the need to provide meaningful appeals more generally /7pic.twitter.com/ezzl0BTh4Y

One of the biggest issues is that we can't escape Facebook's impact, even if we leave Facebook. Here's a simple rec to address that: even non-users should be able to bring cases. I would go even broader and allow 3rd parties to bring cases on behalf of affected ppl: /6pic.twitter.com/2yKSxys98R

Striking proposal for Oversight Board's power to go beyond mere declarations and policy recs, and have bigger remedial jurisdiction incl. $$$. I'm not sure how I feel abt this, when the Board will only hear a small fraction of cases, but in v. serious cases it cld be imp. /5pic.twitter.com/zrzK12Wm5z

Hugely important, simple and impactful recommendation: users should be provided with support and a "user advocate" in cases. Facebook will be a "repeat player" in cases - users should not be disadvantaged bc of this or any other lack of resources /4pic.twitter.com/MzD1oxFDzC

A huge and welcome theme of the report is the need to focus on vulnerable groups, noting the difficulty, intersectionality and contextuality of determining this. Imp. to note that this (& other recs) is a rec for the Board, which Facebook cannot and should not control /3pic.twitter.com/tv5kdM9OOy
