a lot of you #onhere helped me think through this idea, so thanks!!! I think that it was a more engaging and in-depth learning experience for most of the students than just doing a default paper. I also learned a lot from them and enjoyed the grading process more.

one key element was that students had to submit a proposal with a project summary, an outline of content they planned to cover, a project timeline, and (CRUCIAL) a list of attributes they think the final product should have to earn an A. I gave feedback on those.

most proposals were fine. some required revision or clarification, or me checking in to say the timeline was probably unrealistic or the project too unwieldy, suggesting resources or asking questions. honing a couple things, but it went well & i'm doing it again this quarter.

one thing I learned if you want to try this yourself-- I probably should have said the podcasts should be max 30 minutes. and when I was thinking about grading, I didn't think about how long it takes me to listen to a podcast vs. read a paper.

I did zines this semester. I will definitely keep assigning these. Podcasts are next. My favorite creative product remains a student from a class I taught as a grad student. He recorded a song on inequality that he wrote lyrics and music for & played a pretty good guitar solo on.
