Test scores today function as a convenient proxy for race (and poverty) that give convenient cover to white, middle-class parents who in reality simply do not want to enroll their children in schools with lots of black children. The evidence on this is pretty clear.

  12. oh it’s super wasteful. The woman told me “you can buy the products again right there” and pointed to the shop 10 feet away. I was like “so you can throw them away again when I come back here in a week?”

  15. Everywhere, people have shared with me incredible stories. Reading the book to someone in hospice care before their passing, or on the way to court every morning as a juvenile defender, or while working as the only black woman in a school/workplace/program.

  16. We’ve sold thousands of copies, and donated hundreds. I’ve read in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, DC, Kansas, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, California, Georgia, London, Vancouver, and of course, Chicago, often sharing space with people I love & admire.

  18. I keep thinking of retorts, like THIS IS A LIPID THAT HAPPENS TO BE IN A SOLID FORM. A CREAM IS A VISCOUS LIQUID. But then I think about how the word lipid might sound like liquid to them. Then I remember I’m in line at CVS & everyone is waiting & this all happened 3 weeks ago
