This makes a convincing case for why "American Dirt" is problematic--and backs it up with a lot of examples from the text itself. If you don't know this culture (as I don't), listen carefully to the people who do.

it's weird to me that the dialogue around american dirt is being reduced to "brown people mad because white person wrote book" when I see Latinx authors going out of their way to say, yes, anyone can write whatever they want, but there are problems with the content itself.

We’re about thirty seconds away from the movie announcement of American Dirt with Scarlett Johansson as the Mexican migrant mother, brace yourself

If you’re interested in reading , consider reading these books recommended by Mexican/Latinx authors and readers instead!!

is now an selection. As a Mexican immigrant, who was undocumented, I can say with authority that this book is a harmful, stereotypical, damaging representation of our experiences. Please listen to us when we tell you, this book isn’t it.

Today the book world will deploy all its media power to persuade you to buy , a book that grossly distorts & exploits the Latino immigrant experience. Don’t fall for it. The last thing immigrants need is to be “humanized” by a cheap, stereotypical thrill.

We’d prefer it if you didn’t smoke in your terrace”. Le contesté: “I’d prefer it if Canada stopped mining Mexico raw”. Y me volteé y le subí a mi música. Pendejo.

Oprah isn’t just promoting a very problematic book, she’s also revealing a terrible taste in prose. -

Had my cat sleeping next to my computer while I worked so used her as a live reference to create this sleeping Velociraptor.

Starting to think that following wars I have no stake in is the ideal way to enjoy twitter. No clue who Ricky Gervais is, but what I know FOR SURE is he's either Jesus or Satan.

I'm actually jealous of everyone experiencing this story for the first time. The 10% of the plot you have context for is an amazing self-contained story. The other 90% will retroactively blow your mind over and over when you look back on it after watching the next season or two.

Friendly reminder that it's the 20s now and your time should be spent: 1) drinking highballs 2) listening to jazz 3) writing great literature 4) beginning statements with "why" (e.g. "Why, yes, I will have another highball.")
