1) I want to go on a bit about the importance of "Autopoiesis" in thinking about Astrobiology, Life and Mind. The idea was developed by Francisco Varela and Humberto Maturana. It means self-constructing and self-maintaining.

2) This idea which deserves a lot of attention in astrobiology as we begin to think of life as something which doesn't happen on a planet but to a planet. Margulis saw Gaia as autopoietic - not a living thing itself but an emergent self-created, self-maintaining process.

3) One of the coolest parts of autopoiesis is the "operational closure". The system creates the processes and products which are themselves necessary for maintaining the processes and products that allow the system to continue.

4) Life is a loop. Also environment and self emerge together in autopoiesis. It's all a flux of "whatever" until closure establishes what's inside (i.e a cell membrane) from its surrounding (what is now the environment). Rich ideas here for thinking about planets and life!

The relationship between autopoiesis and the Gaia theory was a major theme at a 1988 Lindisfarne conference William Irwin Thompson (my dad) convened in Perugia. Lovelock, Margulis, Varela (and yours truly) were there. This book is the proceedings.https://www.amazon.com/Gaia-Two-Emergence-Science-Becoming/dp/0940262401 …

This was a second meeting: the first one, where Margulis first met Maturana and Varela, was the 1980 Lindisfarne meeting at the Green Gulch Farm of SF Zen Center, documented in this book. https://www.amazon.com/Gaia-Way-Knowing-Political-Implications/dp/0940262231/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1587658996&sr=8-1 …

You can see photos from that meeting, with all of them and my dad, in the film by Franz Reichle about Varela.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf14LoBH37Q …

Also, there's a section in my Mind in Life, devoted to the relation between the autopoiesis and Gaia theories.
