Remember "The Magic Mountain"?! That was about a sanatarium, not quarantine, but a similar vibe. It was long --very very long -- and nutty! Two guys one who symbolized rationalism and one who symbolized irrationalism called Settembrini and Nastorp talk for pages and pages!!!!

This was the first serious novel I ever read in German, all on BART commuting from SF to Berkeley for grad school, probably the same age as you. Weird and claustrophobic and profound seeming, but maybe that was just the super long sentences and BART.
