I think there are different (not mutually exclusive) ways to learn philosophy. One is to be carefully lead through texts and taught how to read them. [1]

Another is to see a gifted thinker engage with (part of) the history of philosophy all at one go and try to throw oneself into the conversation. [2]

Arendt may have done a bit of the former in her lectures but presumably it's the latter she's doing. Even as a first-year undergrad I would have loved to be in the audience. [3]

I have no doubt that listening to Arendt give a paper in every class would be rewarding. I don’t know that this is the kind of class that we should want more of. But i am sure that there are people who I would happily listen to in the way that she expected students to...

...listen to her. My objection is not to her lectures, which may have been fantastic. It’s a worry about treating this *syllabus* as something that it was a mistake to move away from. I did one course in grad school that was someone teaching the book they were writing...

...Arendt appears to have been able to pack lecture halls, because she had such rich and interesting ideas. Moreover the work that came out of these courses is definitely worth reading. I just worry about this approach to a syllabus. <end>
