I’m reading on #integratedinformationtheory right now and trying to get it clear (spec. Koch’s “Feeling of Life Itself”).
I’m failing to see how IIT resolves the hard problem? So we’ve moved from stuff = qualia (somehow) to causal goings on = qualia (somehow). Missing somethin?

I don't think so. IIT has shaky axioms, counterintuitive implications (very simple physical systems have consc), a problematic conception of "levels" of consc, a questionable identity claim (IIT=consc), treats info as intrinsic (observer-independent), & no account of subjectivity

Did you ever write up your defense of biopsychism from the PSA? I thought that was a great session!

I'm still working on it. Presenting it again at the Pacific APA in San Francisco in April.

Please could you elaborate: "Central to this argument is both the insistence on not separating sentience, individuality, and agency (contrary to panpsychism), and the proposition that individuality and agency, which are instantiated already by minimal life, entail sentience."

[1] Sentience->feeling being alive->being a system for which things matter (individuality) & whose actions modulate what matters (agency). (Panpsychism sprinkles sentience everywhere without such systemic requirements.) [2] Individuality/agency->value/norms-> affect/feeling alive

Thank-you!. I would agree on both points but I don't see that they contradict panpsychism. No panpsychist would argue that the most basic units of reality (whether matter or experience) are sentient. Could one not make a distinction between 'feeling' and 'feeling being alive'?

I don't see how--what is feeling w/out some kind of subjectivity, and what is subjectivity w/out some kind of individuality and vital affect? [1]

Panpsychism can be made consistent w/these ideas but most current versions aren't driven by these concerns and look to me to be ad hoc, implausible, and based on questionable assumptions
