Editor’s observation: An author’s Twitter presence and their book sales (crude metrics both, of any human worth) seem to have no correlation. If anything, from where I stand, it’s an inverse correlation. You can’t serve two masters?

It surprises me too. Also, there are many benefits of social media for authors, not just book sales. And I do think it can help with publicity, as we have seen. But what I see: success on social media and book successes are not nearly as closely aligned as one might think.

I think it matters on this micro-level, cultivating attention and interest among groups and potentially reviewers, but the idea that likes and follows translate into sales is false.
