What is the relationship between introspection and metacognitive monitoring? Is it possible to monitor and probe without introspecting? And if so, what purpose does introspection serve?

For those on the Buddhist side of the street, is noting a kind of introspection, or is it just monitoring and reporting?

If you mean the Mahasi Sayadaw noting practice, I think it's metacognitive monitoring and reporting, though whether it can lead to a nonpropositional meta-awareness is an interesting question

I agree that it’s an open question whether it can lead to nonprop meta-awareness...and I think it’s wicked hard to know how to approach that question, as it’s easy to mistake a report of nonprop meta-awareness for an experience of nonprop meta-awareness

Retrospection is the hard issue here...as I think I remember you arguing in the new book?

Yes, there's always the hard question whether it's an occurrent awareness or a retrospective one
