內篇 is a great read, no question. But one kind of knows what to expect. 外篇 is just so eclectic in content and viewpoint. Lots of puzzles and surprises.

Which seems harsh to me, though I suppose it depends on what one thinks of Alan Watts, and I confess I loved his book Tao: The Watercourse Way when I was a teenager

Probably Sivin meant it harshly. I think Ge Hong would have a very successful podcast were he around today.
