I like this a lot but: "Since I’m a modern Westerner who does not wish to renounce the world and become a monastic religionist, there is no way I can be a Buddhist without being a Buddhist modernist" - suggests mandatory monastic life for Buddhists!

Here's a more precise statement, from the Introduction to my book.pic.twitter.com/5AtHiDZKdP

I assume you do in the book. But could you summarise how Buddhist modernism is philosophically unsound?
-
1/2 I argue these Buddhist modernist ideas are false: Buddhism is a science, science validates or shows Buddhism is true, there is no self, meditation reveals the true nature of the mind, enlightenment (E) is independent of concepts, E is a measurable psychological or brain state

Thank you, enjoyed the read. Would you say that there's a correspondence between modern/classical Buddhism (or Juadism, Christianity etc.) and dis/belief in the supernatural, or is that too simplistic?
-
I wouldn't put it that way, because as Durkheim pointed out, the natural/supernatural distinction is itself a modern one that makes sense only within a scientific context

@robertwrighter Your take? -
Based on a quick skim, I don't see much if anything to disagree with. (In my book I said I don't call myself a Buddhist, and this post captures some of the reasons.) Would be fun to discuss these ideas with Evan on my podcast. Evan, dm or email me if you're interested in that.
