Gregory Bateson picked it up and used it in his writings (e.g., Mind and Nature, pp. 106-7); Stafford Beer mentioned it in 1959; and Hans Jonas already critiqued it in 1953 https://www.jstor.org/stable/40969483?seq=1 …
Van Gelder presented it at a 1991 conference in San Marino with me, Varela, Dennett, Bert Dreyfus and others, and we all pointed out that the Watt governor was old news--first generation cybernetics, not second-generation, & not a meta-dynamical system (one that learns to learn)
Thanks for these leads, was not aware of this history.
Dupuy's history of the cybernetics movement is a fascinating one; well worth reading to see how cognitive science 'lost its way'
Agreed. It's a very important study.
The Macy conferences were frustratingly 'inconclusive' but they threw up so many important insights - and point to so many interesting areas of research and inquiry. I found myself taking a deep dive into Alex Bavelas' work on group problem-solving at one stage!
Have you read Mary Catherine Bateson's Our Own Metaphor? https://www.amazon.com/Our-Metaphor-Mary-Catherine-Bateson/dp/1560980702/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=our+own+metaphor&qid=1578154511&sr=8-1 …
No, I haven't! Thanks very much for the pointer, it looks like a great read.
