Ok, real philosophy question. Descartes was a substance dualis. One substance is material stuff. But given his claims about “union” is the second substance thought? Or is it thinking beings (with multiple instances of thinking beings, each a substance)?

*Thought* is the *attribute* of the substance that is the mind. There is a multitude of mental substances (minds) but there's a sense in which there's only one material substance, since Descartes denies there is a void between material bodies.
