Our trains used to be the envy of the world. We'll invest in our railways to bring them back to the standards people rightly expect. pic.twitter.com/3Ln9HyVnMR

As was I. Swiss trains were always the gold standard for me.

In the 1980s, when I started travelling by train, almost all Western European trains were better than British Rail -- cleaner, more efficient, cheaper, on time. The Swiss and Germans and the Italians stood out (the Italian trains have now got much worse). 1/3

Some UK train lines are better now than in the 1970s and 1980s, but many are still not very good, in my experience. The main distinguishing features of UK trains are (i) the quantity of marketing bullshit; and (ii) their outrageous pricing 2/3

Maybe nationalising would help, though I have no idea how they would pay for it, but it would have to be something entirely new, and not a return to a mythical golden age when UK trains were the 'envy of the world' 3/3

Sorry Evan I don't know why I am @-ing you, it's not as if you are British or live in Britain or have to travel on British trains!
