A spot-on review. I couldn't agree more. I'd only add I was shocked to see no reference to Alexandre Koyré or Edmund Husserl, who already made the book's point about Galileo and the mind Siri Hustvedt on Panpsychism’s Shifting Foundations https://lithub.com/siri-hustvedt-on-panpsychisms-shifting-foundations/ … via @lithub

I agree. It is a bit strange to have a book on Galileo's error and then not talk about Crisis, where Husserl discusses that very error. But Goff will be in Copenhagen for a talk in a couple of months, and I will ask him

I haven't read the review yet, but surely this depends on what you're trying to do with the book. I wasn't trying to write a comprehensive history but an opinionated introduction to the problem of consciousness & three solutions.

I always kinda lumped panpsychism with metaphysics and phenomenology with epistemology. In which case, if Goff's making primarily a metaphysical argument, then perhaps the omission of phenomenology is not such a crime. Or am i missing something? Not read the book btw

Depends on the kind of panpsychism, but phenomenologists à la Husserl & Merleau-Ponty would criticize current panpsychism as still missing the transcendental attitude needed to understand consciousness and as still basically objectivist in its approach to science and philosophy

Does he mention Indian traditions of panpsychism? I understand he's had at least one student working on Vedānta, and I would imagine he's aware that his arguments are found in premodern Sanskrit philosophy.

I said the same to Goff. With all due respect, it’s a shame that he is copypasting (not literally, of course) Husserl’s arguments without even mentioning him, but I understand why: Husserl’s transcendental idealism is incompatible with erroneous metaphysics of panpsychism.

That's still no reason not to cite him.

I’ve been pushing similar things at him on twitter, and he always dodges and avoids the questions. This makes me even less willing to read the book...

That review was as gentle as it was scathing. Kudos.
