I’ve been marinating on this for the past week...does translating ‘manasikāra’ as ‘attention’ obscure the role that it plays in shaping ongoing experience? Part of this turns on what attention is, and I can’t decide if I think that all forms of orienting are forms of attention...

What could be a possible alternative if not manasikāra?

Is it different from, for example, the way Todd & Manaligod (2018) defined attention: "the process by which we tune ourselves to the world so that the information that is most important to us reaches awareness and guides action”?

As you know, I think the priority state space stuff is roughly the right way to think about manasikara...but attention is such a contentious term...

Maybe orienting or adverting -- turning toward -- prior to placing and possibly sustaining. The idea that we are biased in what we orient toward/away from connects to @BecketTodd's priority state space model.

I like it better than the translation of "mental application" that I sometimes see for manasikāra.

1/2 Bhikkhu Bodhi, in discussions of its appearance in the Abhidhamma, often uses "orienting." From a section of a draft paper by Georges Dreyfus, "But what is Mindfulness? A Phenomenological Perspective":pic.twitter.com/r2WiF2ZTqJ

We discussed this a lot with Georges Dreyfus and John Dunne in the early days of the Mind and Life Summer Institute (around 2005). The consensus was "orienting" is better than "attention" for manasikāra

I thought about it a bit when I read Jonardon's book! But the more that I've read around in the Abhidharma literature, the clearer it's become that it has to be something like orienting, or almost attuning, though that carries a lot of baggage
