I think there is an underlying metaphysical substrate, and it is closely tied to some of the metaphysical assumptions that Siddhartha Gotama adopted from wider Indic culture (assuming for sake of argument the historicity of Sidd G): samsara, karma, rebirth ("metempsychosis")

I actually started this thread pointing out that trying to identify a single unified Buddhist metaphysics is a modernist move, and isn't, as you say, "historically and philosophically accurate." Same with saying Buddhism is "non-metaphysical."

So, I find this back-and-forth confusing, because I'm pointing out different things in different contexts, and (seemingly) contradicting myself. Everything depends on context, and when someone is missing the whole view, then we end up arguing past each other.

Yeah, and that's on me. I garnered a couple of disparate examples that passed through my salience filter, but you're right, they are snapshots from conversations from very different contexts.

Then, in a separate thread, which was focused on a very different topic (Buddhist extinction rebellion), I was venting about how when people relate to Sutrayana Buddhism just as a nihilistic orthodoxy, which the metaphysics of selflessness leads to IME, they worse than useless.
