Interrupting my stream of basketball tweets to bring you our latest paper, out in @NatureHumBehav today... ...in which some of my closest friends in grad school and I managed to publish a paper inspired by our collective identity crisis. Thread for all you CogSci nerds here:pic.twitter.com/gDDivWi3Uq

5 years into my PhD in Cognitive Science and I still don't know what *it is*. Wikipedia seems to have a pretty solid idea, though. Coded in this diagram, which was first published in the Sloan Foundations meeting report in the 70s, the genesis of Cognitive Science.pic.twitter.com/wmJVjY2SiM

It was predicted that CogSci will be a unified discipline, and be hailed as "the Mind's New Science", integrating all these subfields to investigate the computational principles of the mind. Did this happen?

      Richard Gao Retweeted Tom Wallis

Funny enough, I came across two tweet threads a few weeks ago, exactly 3 months apart, both lamenting the lack of a comprehensive and in-depth CogSci textbook: https://twitter.com/JhendersonIMB/status/1123753163432112128 … https://twitter.com/tsawallis/status/1091282356382720001 … Is that indicative of a problem?

      Richard Gao added,

      Tom Wallis @tsawallis
Recommendations? A modern textbook for "cognitive science". Focus on behaviour and models rather than neuroimaging. Topics like perception, attention, memory, language, ... from a coherent perspective unifying psychology, computer science, philosophy... Too much to ask?

So, in this paper, we look at data regarding a few factors to evaluate what CogSci is today: - affiliation of authors publishing in Cognitive Science (the journal), - the citation environment of CogSci, - CogSci faculty's PhD training, and - undergraduate coursework

There is a lot of data in the short paper so check it out, but in summary: we find that what's "CogSci" is predominantly Psychology, both by who publishes in CogSci and which journals cite/are cited by CogSci.pic.twitter.com/mlCeQSIkW7

Additionally, faculties in the four (Western) Departments of Cognitive Science predominantly come from Psych, and undergraduate coursework requirements from over 30 institutions granting Bachelors in CogSci are extremely variable and ...you guessed it, predominantly in Psych.pic.twitter.com/XUBThIt9ik

This is not meant to be a criticism of cognitive science nor cognitive scientists, but a check-in of what Cognitive Science - the unified field - is, as of today.

Personally, I think the diff schools of thought on cognition - especially embodiment and dynamics, in addition to info-processing - are valuable in advancing not only "cognitive science", but neuroscience and AI. Has that been your experience, as a cognitive scientist, as well?pic.twitter.com/IVue0xeROC
