1/2 I don't like the term "non-western." It treats "west" (whatever that is) as the reference point and designates the remaining 2/3 of the world by negation.

2/2 Better to ask who is the "best" (whatever that means) Chinese, Japanese, Korean, South Asian, or Latin American, etc. philosopher

there are more & less general versions of this question, & I am interested in what thoughts were on the general versions questions...however, if I asked best philosopher, would have gotten a lot of western male analytic philosophers, so i broke it down to mix things up, c'mon man

I understand. I don't mean to come off as negative. I just don't know how to answer the question. Is Nāgārjuna better than Zhuangzi? Xunzi better than Jayarāśi Bhaṭṭa? Do those questions even make sense?

I think for many they do. Question is open ended! Depends on your conception of quality. Presumably you think some philosophers are trash. Of course, greats might be equally great in your mind, so it is impossible to say, but the question still makes sense.

I was being literal minded and took "all time best" as not allowing for more than one. But I did answer for my personal favourites. As for those I think are trash, well, that's another story...
