Your regular reminder that open plan offices are bad in every possible way and actually stymie interaction in addition to making people less efficient (Hotdesking is even worse, let people have their own desks, and don’t get me started on work lockers)https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2019/04/airpods-open-plan-offices/588112/ …

It’s forced intimacy and people will never react well to it. The reality is, it’s generally done to save on space, and justified by dubious reasoning around breaking down barriers between team members etc.

At Vodafone my office was in a old manor house with oak panelled walls. I shared it with our PA who only worked mornings and my boss who was hardly there. Bliss!

Aside from the one linked to in that article, have you got any good studies on this? My co is doing a new build and they're moving over to a massive open plan office layout, with hotdesks, and I think it'll be a massive shock to a lot of people

Vox did a good piece a while back that referenced a few studies.

I might be the only person who thinks this isn't a big deal and might be positive . Our company did it and I like it Have you disaggregated the office layout to company quality? Bad companies suck, open office or not. If Google went open office my guess is nothing would change.

Obviously you’re going to mind it less if you like your company and/or your colleagues. But it’ll still annoy you, one way or another - people’s tics, their smelly lunches, whatever. I have a loud voice, for example - if I don’t make an effort to modulate it, it can annoy others.

The only thing that has been made more efficient by the open plan hellscape is spreading cold/flu viruses with as much ease and speed as a daycare center ball pit.

I picture a world in future years in which everyone but the rich will be expected to "hothouse": carry their personal possessions around with them and find a different, sterile, empty home to squat in with them each day and night (when not at work) until the next morning.

It also totally demoralizes people who worked their way up to offices and tells them experience and seniority are no longer valued.

I often sit in the stairwell in the office to work when it gets noisy. At other times our area is so uncomfortably quiet (no white noise) that I can hear other people's thoughts.

My employer is consolidating from 2 floors to 1. There might be 20-30 open desks on the floor now, but there will be 80 people moving in. Good bet that our walls are going away.
