What a ridiculous assertion. al Qa'ida wasn't a force in Libya until after Qaddafi fell.

This guy is an international relations professor? That's terrifying.https://twitter.com/maxabrahms/status/906518483042799617 …
-
Huh? Who disputes that point? Nusra, HTS, the ephemeral monicker in between etc.
-
There's a difference between al Qa'ida proper and "affiliated" groups. Zawahri is a control freak.
-
The HTS 'merger' aside, they also still largely operate in their original factions. Nusra and JS will split off as soon as it's convenient.
-
Maybe but that's not relevant to your snarky Tweet that started this exchange.
-
Snark aside, it's dangerous to oversimplify the quagmire that is Syria - groups are loosely allied, but all very different ideologically.
-
Your issue at least originally was my calling Nusra and HTS "Al Qaeda types." Now you've gone all over the place in your arguments.

Are you denying CIA-involved support for "rebels" helped Al Qaeda types in Libya and Syria?
-
As an expert, you're clearly far too credentialed to be making these Chris Hedges level arguments.
-
You don't think we worked alongside Al Qaeda types in Libya and Syria and that doing so has worked out terribly, really?
-
Al Qa'ida wasn't in Libya until after Qaddafi. Libyans are responsible for their own country. If they want tribal wars, that's on them.
-
We don't deserve any blame for the militia madness in Libya today? Not even a little??
-
That's not what you said, Max. Red herrings won't work.

Isn't it common knowledge that by funding Saudi Arabia/Gulf States, the spread of Wahhabism/Salafism is somewhat perpetuated by the West?
-
No it isn't because it's total nonsense. How the hell do we "fund" Saudi Arabia?
-
you dont consider these billions of dollars in arms deals as 'funding'?
-
Maybe if you're talking about them Funding Lockheed and Boeing. B/c they pay for those arms. We don't give them away.
-
but the West will happily take their money.. while we stand by as they spread their vilest manifestation/perversion/corruption of Islam
-
That's quite different than "funding their government" and thus funding al Qa'ida.
-
what if I had said 'supporting' their government instead of 'funding'? because we are probably in agreement, just using different words..
