I think I get it. They’re saying academic institutions are supposed to do research that seems aimless (and sometimes is) because you never know what’ll end up important. Whether that’s funded by a rich a$$hole or not is somewhat irrelevant. The university is still doing its job.

Exactly. There are also two, separate funding streams now, so people bad at institutional politics can tap into the rich dilettante stream where normally they'd be shut out
