You're diagnosis is precisely right, but it's understandably difficult to conceive that: - what's in charge is fully in charge, - what's in charge is incompetent, - what's in charge is not centralized.

The only semi-positive response I get when I tell people this is 'I hope you're right'. The conspiratorial impulse on our 'side' is very strong, people want to believe this tribe or this group has everything planned and calculated. Alex Jones/kantbot thinking runs rampant

I do the same thing: I see some strange, glaring error or inconsistent messaging and I wonder, 'why are they doing this'. Even if it isn't just incompetence, it's probably better to just consider it as such rather than defaulting to 'enemy is omnipotent'.

It's all about the ability to manipulate procedural outcomes and influence institutions to their ends. This effectively enables "them" to paper over glaring inconsistencies (e.g. the whole narrative surrounding the discovery of COVID)

I still think you underestimate what this means for the edge case where somebody is extremely competent & and has/gains power. But after sleeping on it, I do think your point has more weight to the overall situation.

Also, popular discourse is so insipid bc it is pitched around the level of avg IQ, which is why it is able be at once both facile and full of contradictions. Advertisements, think pieces, tweets etc - as well as policy making - make more sense if you understand them at this level

People underestimate the importance of extraversion to obtaining power. Plenty of twitter anons at least as smart as Gates / Musk etc. Most just don't need the same level of constant stimulation and validation

No doubt, but I think what people are on to is that the power behind these tardies is literally Satan, and that this is a fallen world. If ppl had that rational startingpoint, they would not be hung up on trying to find 'the evil genius'.

I think we seek ways to make sense of chaos. We prefer having a rational enemy than irrational brutality. The basis of tragedy is the eventual succumbing to the sound and fury, and all heroic characters try but fail to resist this fate.
