Conferences began primarily as academic phenomenon. They allow profs to spend dedicated research funds on travel & enjoy free vacations. People outside academia, who do not understand this, but also wish to do an Intellectualism, picked up the practice.

They also have ancillary functions as opportunities for CV-padding, networking, and random sexxors with other academics, often graduate students (a million times more terrible than it sounds). None of it is about spreading ideas.
