Modern takes generally suffer from lack of attention to rhetoric, in the manner of the ancients. Where an ancient would see opportunities to build & deploy ethos, moderns complicate logos or lay on pathos. Like trying to drive a car with no brakes.

this is spot on, there is this non-confrontational aspect, belief in a world where intellectual favours (positive book reviews, recommendations, whatever) are social investment that will be returned. all of these ppl can never realise, the other side play a totally different game
