Drosten made a name for himself in 2003, as an early developer of a PCR test for SARS. Either you believe that the Wuhan outbreak was old news in China, the virus had long since been identified & sequenced, and Drosten was merely the most plausible figure they could find, to launder all of this internal research into western scientific publications …
… or you have to accept that Drosten & colleagues just randomly became interested in a handful of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, guessed on the basis of social media that it was a SARS-related virus, and were inspired for wholly mysterious reasons to rush a new PCR test into print.
Thesis: By early January, China had already decided on some version of the Hubei lockdown, as international propaganda. For that to work, they needed their disease statistics to be credible in the west, founded in a PCR test developed by western scientists.
