Also, and I guess this hardly matters, but Americans looking at parliamentary systems, often see parties there that they perceive to be left of American Democrats, and conclude (wrongly) that there is no true left political representation in America.

In fact the American system collapses basically the same political spectrum you see in parliamentary countries, into two massive political parties. You have basically pre-fashioned coalitions, and Americans end up with mostly the same centre-left gvt as everyone else has.
