I keep hearing "variants" as motivation for not lifting things. Otoh, apparently China is getting "hit hard" by the "Indian variant" right now.
The variants are all variations on a theme, all have related mutations in spike protein that confer an advantage, maybe 10-30%. But something about this is unstable, each variant loses the advantage over time, until a new fresh variant with related mutations leaps ahead again.
Gain of function processes responsible for the virus seem to have already more or less optimised its transmissibility.
Vaxx works against all of them too. I’m sure there will be escape mutations, but they aren’t here yet.
